Norwich Puppet Theatre visit Year 4

Norwich Puppet Theatre visited Year 4 on Thursday 5th May 2022 to deliver a Shadow Puppet workshop as part of their Puppetry unit in Drama this term. Shadow puppetry supports the development of scientific investigation skills and understanding of light and dark. Shadow is also a great creative tool for storytelling and explaining concepts, making it a rich context for cross-curricular learning.

During the workshop, children were introduced to the art of shadow puppetry. They learnt about the materials involved in making puppets before having the opportunity to create their own. They had to think carefully about how opaque, translucent, and transparent materials would affect the design of their puppets and some even created designs including moving parts. The children then tested out their shadow puppets using simple screens and lights.

Year 4 will continue developing the skills learnt in this workshop within subsequent Drama lessons this term. Mr Forsey and some Year 7 students have created screens for us to use so we can work on our story-telling techniques through the art of puppetry.
