Encouraging a Love for Reading: New Programmes at Langley Prep School

At Langley Prep School, we believe that fostering a love for reading is essential to our pupil’s educational journey. In line with this commitment, we are celebrating the introduction of the Accelerated Reader (AR) programme, a dynamic computer-based tool designed to enhance children’s independent reading practices as well as Little Wandle, a systematic synthetic phonics and reading scheme.

As we recently celebrated World Book Day, a day devoted to the joy of reading and storytelling, we found it fitting to highlight how our new programme aligns perfectly with this global event. World Book Day reminds us of the magic that books bring to our lives, and AR and the Little Wandle scheme are here to amplify that experience for our pupils.

Through the AR programme, children can select books at their reading level and take short comprehension quizzes after each book. This process not only incentivizes reading but also provides immediate feedback and motivation for young readers. Our dedicated staff closely monitors each student’s progress on the AR platform, ensuring that every child is supported in their reading journey.

The positive impact of the AR initiative is already becoming evident. Research shows that primary students using AR are significantly more likely to meet the KS2 reading benchmarks thanks to the evidence-based approach that empowers children to take ownership of their reading habits.

The Little Wandle scheme is a Department for Education-validated phonic programme which supports pupils to teach comprehension skills. As well as introducing this within our Pre-prep, we continue to offer pupils daily phonics sessions, reading practice sessions and even 1:1 ‘keep up’ sessions for those who may need them.

To complement the AR and the Little Wandle programmes, we proudly invite our pupils to explore our well-stocked and newly renovated library. With a carefully curated selection of books that are even colour-coded for easy navigation, our library serves as a treasure trove of reading material, encouraging students to dive into the enchanting world of literature.

As we continue to celebrate the importance of reading—especially during events like World Book Day—Langley Prep School remains steadfast in our mission to cultivate a generation of enthusiastic readers.
