Support, care and warmth is everywhere.
The needs of every boarder are different, and our team is there to support the integration of each boarder into the school community, and to make sure that the foundations are there for each young person to thrive in our care. Boarding schools offer a unique experience, and the boarding team plays a critical role in shaping the experience. We recognise that, and we have built a team around the needs of our boarders.
Our team is used to dealing with a range of issues, from challenges with assimilating into a new culture to difficulties balancing the school environment with their life back home. They quickly get to know each child, and spend time understanding their aspirations, challenges and friendship groups. As Langley is a medium-sized school, it is easy for the team to know your child and be ready to support them.
Our staff team is there in the boarding houses in the evenings, providing guidance, ensuring that prep is done and making sure the younger pupils go to sleep on time, ready for another busy day.
The Head of Boarding co-ordinates a team in charge of pastoral care, safeguarding and mentoring, as well as working with the catering team and the other on-site boarding supervisors.
Our biggest priority is always the safety and security of the children in our care. We take this responsibility extremely seriously. Boarding school staff are trained to prioritise the safeguarding and welfare of students. Staff ensure a secure environment by following strict child protection policies and procedures, conducting regular safety checks, and being vigilant about students’ interactions and behaviour. There are secure doors in place to ensure that only boarders and a select group of staff have access to the boarding houses. Our evening and weekend staff are on hand to supervise, where needed, the making of snacks and hot drinks. The team is also trained in first aid.
The well-being of students is a top priority. Whether your child is with us on a full-boarding basis or is a flexi-boarder, we are available to them throughout their time with us. We create a nurturing environment where pupils feel safe, valued and heard. A suggestion scheme is in operation, as are some agreed sanctions if behaviour does not meet the standards that the community sets for itself. Boarding school staff are trained to identify signs of stress, anxiety, friendship issues or homesickness, and our on-site medical team is present during the school week for any emotional or physical concerns. This approach ensures that pupils’ needs are met, allowing them to focus on enjoying their studies and personal growth. The staff provide a ‘home away from home’ environment, managing everything from daily routines to ensuring a healthy, supportive and inclusive atmosphere. They handle various aspects of student life, such as overseeing meals, curfews, study hours, and ensuring proper hygiene and discipline. The team also co-ordinates travel arrangements when pupils are preparing to return home, as well as making sure that they have the correct and valid documents with them.
Another important aspect of the work of the boarding team is to encourage pupils to participate in the extra-curricular activities on offer. Sports, drama, music, community initiatives and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme are all opportunities there for the taking, and an important part of integrating into the school is the personal growth that comes with trying new things.
The team works hard to organise a programme of activities and events to build the community and ensure that boarders have choices about how to spend their time. Some pupils are happy to stay on-site, working on projects or hobbies, but others want to take part in events such as theatre trips, tenpin bowling, going to Harry Potter World, or simply taking advantage of the freedom to go into Norwich with friends.
