Why Year 6 to 8 at Taverham?

Those all-important final Prep School years

At Langley, we have always been great at recognising that every child is an individual. We discover what makes a child’s eyes light up, what gets them talking and what ignites a fire in them.

Our child-centred approach to education means that we continually review the way we deliver education across both Prep and Senior. We believe that transition into Senior School is optimal at two points: Year 7 and Year 9.

Confidence

At Langley Prep, we are building out a coherent and ambitious programme for Years 6-8 to support children as they prepare to transition to Langley Senior School. This includes programmes such as Junior Duke (similar to the Duke of Edinburgh award but for younger children) and a programme for young entrepreneurs, introducing them to the world of innovation and business, tailored for younger audiences. Additionally, we are planning some exciting new additions to the core curriculum which will support children as they transition through to Senior School. This will result in fewer completely new concepts having to be introduced as they advance their educational journey, accelerating their ability to “hit the ground running”.

Year 6 to Year 8 at our Prep School sees new leadership opportunities as pupils move up to the top end of the school. As a result, the confidence they gain in those final years sees every one of them develop a natural readiness for Senior School life.

Leadership opportunities

  • Head Boy and Head Girl

  • Senior prefect

  • Mentoring Year 3 pupils

  • Wensum Award (similar to DofE)

  • International trips

Kindness

Our mentorship programme pairs our experienced Year 8s with young Year 3 pupils, with the former offering a friendly face, a listening ear and a whole lot of support. Year 3 marks the start of the Prep School, so it is a big step up from Pre-Prep, and the pupils adore their Year 8 mentors.

Next steps

Lastly, our Years 6-8 programme will allow children to be prepared pastorally for senior school, having had exposure to leadership opportunities and more support in developing the cognitive and self-regulation skills that are needed for the next stage in the journey.

Specialist teaching in Year 8 at the Prep School helps ensure a smooth transition up to our Senior School. By helping prepare pupils ahead of things like subject choices, which are made in Year 9, staff support each child’s journey to make it both seamless and exciting.
