“Rugby has always been central to life at Langley, and the launch of our Rugby Academy marks an exciting next step in that tradition. Our aim is to help every pupil reach the highest level they are capable of, whether that leads to performance pathways, university rugby or a lifelong enjoyment of the game.”

Jonny Wheeler, Head of Sport

Why choose Langley for rugby?

Langley School has a long and proud history of developing strong, talented rugby players. We have built a reputation for sporting excellence, with former pupils progressing to Leicester Tigers and other top-level clubs.

England and Leicester Tigers scrum-half Jack van Poortvliet began his rugby journey at Langley Prep School, and our position as hosts of the National U15 Rugby Festival reflects the strength of our rugby heritage.

Our Rugby Academy builds on that pedigree, providing a structured, year-round programme for pupils who want to take their performance further while remaining part of Langley’s wider academic, pastoral and co-curricular community.

Whatever your starting point, our coaches will meet your ambitions head-on.

A pathway built around the individual

The Langley Rugby Academy follows the successful format of the Langley Football Academy, providing a specialist rugby pathway for pupils in Year 10 to Sixth Form.

Players benefit from additional timetabled rugby sessions each week, combining technical and tactical coaching with a carefully planned programme of physical and personal development.

The Academy programme includes:

  • Small-group pitch sessions

  • Position-specific technical coaching

  • Individualised player development (tactical, athletic, movement)

  • Strength and conditioning

  • Nutrition education

  • Sports psychology

  • Performance analysis

  • Competitive fixtures and match experience

Whether you are perfecting your place-kicking, developing your lineout understanding or learning how to dominate at the scrum, there is a place for you at Langley.

Our aim is not to produce identical players. It is to help every pupil become the best player, and the best version of themselves, that they can be.

Tackling excellence at every level

Langley is proud to support pupils striving towards a future in performance-level sport and our coaches are integral to this.

Our coaching team brings specialist expertise gained through talent development, junior academies and professional playing careers. Many also coach within local clubs, ensuring that our methods remain informed by contemporary thinking and developments within the game.

Our Athletic Development Model supports:

  • Fundamental movement skills

  • Sport-specific conditioning

  • Speed, strength and power

  • Injury-risk reduction

  • Effective recovery

  • Long-term athletic development

From September 2026, players will also benefit from a fully refurbished gym equipped with the latest equipment to support their strength, conditioning and athletic progression.

Across our 100-acre campus, rugby players have access to six pitches, a scrum machine, sports training equipment and extensive indoor and outdoor facilities. It is an environment designed to help young athletes train with purpose and perform with confidence.

Connections that create opportunity

Talent needs opportunity, and Langley’s rugby connections can help open doors.

Our player pathways are supported by strong links with Leicester Tigers and several other clubs across the UK. We also maintain connections with Eastern Counties Rugby, local clubs and universities throughout East Anglia and across the UK.

These relationships can give talented and committed players access to high-quality competition, external development opportunities and informed guidance about their next steps.

For some pupils, that may mean pursuing an academy or professional pathway. For others, it may lead to opportunities in coaching, performance or athletic development.

Every pathway matters.

Go further outside the school day

Langley’s full, weekly and flexi-boarding options allow pupils to immerse themselves more fully in Academy life.

Boarders can benefit from greater access to the school’s facilities beyond the normal school day, including supervised opportunities to use the gym and continue their athletic development. Boarding also provides valuable time for recovery, preparation and connection with teammates following training sessions and fixtures.

For pupils balancing academic ambition with a demanding sporting schedule, boarding offers structure, community and the opportunity to make the most of everything the Academy provides.

Discover potential on and off the field

Development at the Langley Rugby Academy is not limited to one pitch or one sport.

Players arrive with different experiences, strengths and ambitions. Our role is to understand each player and provide the coaching, challenge and support they need to reach their potential.

By combining rugby with a broad education, multi-sport foundations and exceptional pastoral care, Langley helps pupils develop as athletes, students, teammates and young people.

The Academy provides a strong foundation for pupils hoping to pursue professional opportunities within the game, and an inspiring environment for anyone who simply wants to see how far their commitment can take them.
