Just one week after a bumper set of A Level results arrived, Langley School is celebrating another group of exceptional pupils; this time our GCSE students, who have put in an outstanding performance once again.
Pupils taking exams across a broad range of subjects delivered some truly exceptional performances across the board. Those subjects included Mandarin, Science, Further Maths, French and Photography. Core subject pass data is outstanding this year, with the percentage of passes at 9-4 across both Maths and English at 92%. The pass rate for English and Maths were 95% and 94% respectively, demonstrating the quality of teaching across these two critical subject areas. In total, 68% of grades awarded were 9-5, and 26% were top grades 9-7.
Underlying these absolute percentages is another measure of significance, that of progress achieved versus each individual starting point. As Langley is academically non-selective, achievement in this measure is a central area of focus. Across all GCSE subjects, students’ results are 2-3 grades above the grades that they would otherwise have been expected to achieve. This underlines what happens when motivation, individualised attention and ambition come together.
Individual personal challenges, accomplishments and ambitions lie behind each year’s results. Each pupil has a story to tell, and we are proud to share a selection of stories today.
Among them is the story of Eliza D. Eliza is a Year 10 student, who took two subjects ahead of schedule; A Level Russian and GCSE English Language. Having attained an incredible A* in A Level Russian last week, Eliza has gone on to achieve the top grade, 9, in English Language this week. Enormous congratulations to Eliza!
A second success story belongs to Harry C. Harry has attained a slew of top grades including a 9 in Photography, which is not surprising given he won a global photography competition spearheaded by Norwich University of the Arts, back in early July.
A pathway of a different nature is ahead for classmates George D and Will T after their GCSEs. Both are in residential trials for Premiership rugby club Exeter, and we wish them every success as they pursue their rugby dreams.
One other success story is Lily C. Not only did Lily attain a huge number of grades at 8 and 9, but she is also the student with the highest rate of progress across the year group as a whole. Our congratulations to Lily, who is also an incredibly accomplished vocalist. Her future plans include a degree in Veterinary Science.
This group of talented pupils is now ready to embark on the next stage of their academic journey. For the majority, this means enrolling in Langley’s Sixth Form, with aspirations to progress across a number of specialist pathways, ranging from Fine Art and Music to Psychology, Economics and Business.
Each path reflects not only the individual talents of our students, but also the ability of Langley School to support a diverse range of pathways. Our students’ ambition and confidence to pursue their dreams is not a happy accident; it is an outcome of the environment that has nurtured them throughout their school lives. Langley is a close-knit community, enabling an individual approach that cannot easily be replicated elsewhere.
Langley’s Executive Head (Designate) Clare Rackham comments:
GCSE results day is one of the most important milestones of the academic year. This year’s results represent tremendous progress towards realising our academic strategy. We are delighted with the overall results but also touched by the individual stories behind them. Seeing the expectant but nervous faces of pupils and parents transform into pride and excitement is an incredibly fulfilling moment. We recognise, too, that not every young person feels such delight. Our understanding of each young person allows us to step in, listen, and gently guide them forward. Our greatest joy is not always to be found in grades, but in the development of each young adult inside and outside the classroom. This year’s results reflect enormous amounts of hard work and great teaching, allowing young people to move forward confidently across a broad range of pathways. We are looking forward to welcoming so many of the group into Sixth Form in September, and we are excited for what they will achieve over the coming two years.
