Kalan’s Sixth Form Story

As Deputy Head Boy, Kalan has embraced every opportunity to lead, contribute and grow during his time in the Sixth Form. He describes Langley in three words -challenging, collaborative and memorable, each one reflecting a different part of his experience.

For Kalan, collaboration and connection is part of daily life at Langley – from group activities to the open spaces around the school where conversations naturally happen. One of his favourite places is the Chapel, especially on bright days when the walk there becomes a moment to pause, chat with friends and take in the surroundings.

Among all his experiences, the Combined Cadet Force stands out as the most impactful.

“CCF gives you foundational skills that set you up for later in life – collaboration, leadership, discipline,” he says. “It’s something schools don’t always prepare you for, but Langley does.”

Kalan has taken on significant responsibility within the programme. He led the RAF section before transferring to the Army, overseeing equipment, leading the section and ensuring everything ran smoothly. These roles have shaped his confidence and leadership style. “Every day in CCF brings a new challenge,” he explains. “And being Deputy Head Boy has helped me grow in confidence and in how I speak to people.”

One of Kalan’s proudest achievements has been spearheading the student mentoring scheme. He coordinated a team of 30 students, assigning mentors, organising timetables and ensuring each pairing was a good fit.

Kalan also spoke fondly about the school trips Langley offers – from The Globe to Norwich Theatre to see Hamlet – and speaks passionately about English, where he enjoyed the chance to debate, discuss and dive deeply into ideas.

When asked what he would tell future families considering Langley, Kalan doesn’t hesitate: “There is always a place for you here — no matter where you come from.”

It’s a message that reflects the inclusive, supportive environment he has experienced firsthand.

Next year, Kalan will be heading off to study Law, with ambitions to become a solicitor or barrister. He ultimately wants to make a positive difference in the world.

Various debating opportunities at Langley, including NORMAC and the EU Mace, have helped shape his interest in the legal field. “They opened my eyes and helped me develop the skills I’ll need for the future,” he says.

As he prepares to hand over his role, his advice for the next Head or Deputy Head Boy is thoughtful:
