MFL success for Langley School scholars

Congratulations to this team of amazing Year 9 scholars, who have recently taken part in both the Regional Finals of the Foreign Language Translation Bee in Peterborough and The Flash Fiction Competition at University of Oxford.

Most recently, pupils Daniel R, Raihaan A, Alexander P and Harry C took part in the Regional Finals of the Foreign Language Translation Bee, competing against 12 other schools. During this competition, they each had to translate as many sentences as possible from English to French/Spanish accurately and at speed within a minute, out loud and in front of an audience. There was a nail-biting tie-breaker for Alexander P as he battled with another pupil for a place in the National Final, but was just pipped to the post. To watch them do this with such courage was amazing.

In the build up to this event, Harry C also entered The Flash Fiction Competition, which is run by the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages at University of Oxford. We were so pleased to learn that his entry in the Y7-Y9 category was highly commended!

It was really inspiring for us to see so many promising young linguists engaging with an academic activity like this.

The Spanish judging panel were extremely impressed with this year’s entries, and commented the following about all the stories they read:

‘As always, we were captivated by the creativity of the many entries and thrilled to see a lot of very promising stories. It was a hard job choosing from so many markedly different pieces, some of which were humorous or haunting, serious or silly, but all entertaining. This year, there were quite a few that engaged intertextually with other works in English and Spanish literature as well as classical literature and myth and it was particularly good to see how your wider reading has been channeled into your own imaginative responses to the sources.’
