We are delighted to share the excellent results from this year’s Raspberry Pi Coding Competition. An impressive 24 pupils from the Prep School achieved a Distinction, with a further two pupils earning the prestigious Gold Award, placing them in the top 10% nationally. Notably, one pupil also achieved full marks, while another narrowly missed this distinction by just one question.
Across the school, pupils have been developing their computing, coding and problem-solving skills through a range of exciting, hands-on projects.
In Year 7, pupils have been programming animations, interactive art and games using Game Lab, applying key programming concepts and following the design processes used by professional computer scientists.
Meanwhile, Year 8 pupils have been developing their own ‘Apps for Good,’ identifying real world needs that they care about and designing app solutions to address them. This has encouraged pupils to think creatively and purposefully about how technology can make a positive difference.
Younger pupils in Year 3 and Year 6 pupils have also been engaging with robotics, with Year 3 developing their understanding of algorithms by programming Dash robots to sing, dance and respond to voice and visual cues. Year 6 pupils have taken part in a series of STEM challenges using VEX robotics, putting their teamwork, problem-solving skills and resilience to the test.
In addition, Year 5 pupils have been exploring 3D design, taking on the challenge of creating a park that not only offers a beautiful environment but also promotes sustainability and environmental awareness.
In Year 4, pupils have been developing their creativity and technical skills through the creation of stop motion animations. They have been learning a range of techniques such as frame-by-frame capture, consistent lighting, camera stability, and manipulation of objects to create smooth and effective movement.
Teaching STEM and coding as part of the curriculum is vital in equipping our young people with the skills they need to thrive in an increasingly digital world. Through hands-on, practical learning, pupils are actively engaged in the learning process, which helps them make stronger connections between knowledge and real-world application, and the outcomes speak for themselves.
We are incredibly proud of all our pupils’ fantastic achievements and look forward to seeing how they continue to build on their creativity, confidence and technical skills in the future.
