Recent Seasons

A summary of recent seasons.

  • An excellent pre-season saw the school hosting a range of players from Italy to train alongside various school teams. The rugby program has gone from strength to strength, with an increasing number of boys and girls representing the school. Every boy in year 7 represented the school, which is more than 40 young players.

In the Langley U15 National Rugby Festival our team came 3rd in their pool, with noticeable wins against Trinity Croydon and Tonbridge, which resulted in Langley contesting the Vase final. Our squad contained six players who had been selected for Leicester Tigers DPP. Two of our U18 Players were also selected to represent Norfolk and another for Suffolk in the Eastern Counties Tri-Counties tournament.

At under U15s the boys won the county plate for 7’s, while the U16 boys retained the county 7s cup title for the third successive season. From that squad, four players were selected for the Leicester Tigers Academy U18 squad, while two further players had extended trials in the summer period.

We took six teams to Rosslyn Park National 7 for the first time in its history, with three girls teams and 3 boys teams competing. The U16s won their group to make the last 32 in the country before being knocked out by eventual winner Sedburgh.

  • Great numbers continued to engage in contact rugby and our Michaelmas fixture card included more than 50 fixtures, with new opponents being added to ensure that progressive competition.

We added to our U15 squad following interest from local club players, which resulted in a positive National Cup run and a good showing at our U15 National Rugby Festival. The squad also retained their County 7s title.

Our U14s were County Champs at 15s and runners up in the 7s. There were runner up medals for the U18s in the County Plate competition, and they were also Plate Champions in 7s. We sent five teams to Rosslyn Park 7s, including girls teams at U14 and U16. There is more appetite than ever for girls rugby at school, opening up some super opportunities for our girls.

We had nine boys selected for the Leicester Tigers U15 DPP training group and their future looks promising in the Tigers Academy. We also had one player in the Tigers U18 Academy team, who had a highly successful season. We continue to attract pupils from a range of rugby clubs in the area, strengthening our ties with the local community.

  • A young and exciting 1st XV progressed through the early stages of the National Bowl competition. There was a large group of players with great potential coming through our U13s and U14s teams.

A greater focus on touch rugby in Games sessions re-engaged pupils who may have had concerns about the contact element of the game and we saw increasing numbers of girls taking rugby as an option in activities.

We were finalists in three out of four County 7s competitions and the U14s were crowned champions. We were also delighted to host our annual U15 National Rugby Festival, in which 13 teams participated. Wellington College went on to win the tournament.

We had initial discussions with a new Rugby League franchise being set up (Anglian Vipers in conjunction with Hull FC), about partnering and offering a year round rugby provision with exit routes into a National League and Super League club. Ten boys went up to train with Hull academy in early June and Johnny Wheeler is Player/Coach with the Vipers team.

We had two boys in the Leicester Tigers Academy programme and former pupil George Loose was been called up to the England U18 Squad. We were also actively engaged with recent alumni, Simone Panella, in some world leading research into concussion and head injury prevention as a part of his studies at Brunel Business School and his Dyamotech start-up.
