Written by incoming Head of Prep Mrs Rackham, the third blog in our new fortnightly series about education is called ‘Laying the Foundations: The First Five Years.’ It focuses on early development and the importance of those formative years. Over to you, Mrs Rackham.
Education is often seen as a lifelong journey, but the foundation for a child’s future is laid in the earliest years of life. Research consistently shows that the first five years are critical in shaping cognitive, emotional and social development. These formative years provide the building blocks for confidence, curiosity and resilience—qualities that will support a child throughout their education and beyond.
At Langley Prep, it is recognised that early years education is not just about preparing children for formal schooling, but about nurturing a love for learning from the very start. The environment in which a child learns during these years is just as important as what they learn. The nursery and early years settings are carefully designed to spark imagination, encourage exploration and provide security, helping children to develop their independence while feeling supported in their journey of discovery.
One of the most important developments at Langley Prep is the continued evolution of the early years provision. With a strong emphasis on outdoor learning, play-based exploration and the development of core skills, it is ensured that children build the confidence and curiosity needed to thrive. The woodland setting provides a natural extension of the classroom, allowing children to engage with their environment in meaningful ways—from investigating seasonal changes to developing problem-solving skills through outdoor activities.
Beyond cognitive development, these years are fundamental for social and emotional growth. The ability to collaborate, communicate and develop empathy begins in these first few years. Activities that encourage teamwork, group play and open-ended problem-solving help children build essential interpersonal skills. Whether through role-playing, cooperative learning projects, or shared storytelling, these experiences nurture emotional intelligence and prepare children for meaningful relationships in later life.
Parents and educators play a crucial role in shaping these early experiences. Strong home-school partnerships ensure that children feel supported and that their learning is consistent and engaging. By working together, we can create an environment where every child flourishes—nurturing their natural curiosity and setting them on a path of lifelong learning.
The first five years are a time of rapid growth and they deserve our full attention. At Langley Prep, there is a clear commitment to ensuring that these years are filled with joy, discovery and the foundations for future success. I look forward to seeing our youngest learners take their first steps on this exciting journey and to working with families to make these years as enriching and rewarding as possible.
